The Yard

Chilmark, Massachusetts

The Yard is a contemporary artist residency, performance, and education center serving Martha’s Vineyard, the region, and the nation. Founded in 1973 as a residency center for rising choreographers, The Yard works to establish its programs and the art and application of contemporary dance as vital community assets and communication. An ArtsAmplified grant of $950,000 will support The Yard as it implements its vision to serve Martha’s Vineyard residents and the regional dance community with year-round arts programming and public engagement. Funds will enable The Yard to maintain its off-season series and premier rural/island education program, invest in staff development, heighten its fundraising capacity, and advance planning for pivotal renovations of its campus facilities.

“Working in a diverse, rural environment where communities don’t necessarily bridge together, it’s our job to figure out ways of going deeper inside of those communities, to respond to singular expressed needs, and to seed intersectional opportunities.” – David R. White, Artistic Director and Executive Producer
