Barr’s Clean Energy grantmaking seeks to accelerate the transformation of the Northeast energy system to equitable, clean, efficient energy.

By that, we mean scaling-up renewables and energy efficiency across the Northeast; promoting efforts to modernize the grid to enable that scale-up; and supporting the energy workforce transition and fostering learning networks that help cities and states get smarter about the most effective strategies from around the world.

Successful efforts to expand clean energy, phase out fossil fuels, promote energy efficiency and electrification, and price carbon emissions have put the Northeast region at the forefront of aggressively pursuing solutions to climate change. Despite this progress, our region is not on track to meet energy targets for 2050. The energy sector is a major source of emissions and transitioning to clean energy is a key solution to reduce climate impacts, local pollution, and increase the region’s energy affordability and reliability.

Grantmaking Priorities

Our goal is to accelerate the clean energy transition in the Northeast by phasing out natural gas, modernizing the electric grid, and giving the public more transparency and control of the energy system.

Towards that end, our grantmaking supports efforts to:

  • Build a diverse constituency for clean energy.
  • Support clean energy advocates as they champion equitable state and regional clean energy policies and programs.
  • Raise awareness of the urgency, opportunities, and benefits of equitable clean energy strategies.
  • Fund research, analysis, and demonstration projects that can inform policy decisions.
