A new report released this week by the Boston-based Analysis Group summarizes the significant benefits to Massachusetts of its signature climate and energy policy – the Green Communities Act of 2008. A few highlights from the report…
By 2025, programs implemented in the act’s first six years are expected to yield:
- $1.2 billion in net economic benefits
- 16,000 jobs
- A decrease by 31 million metric tons of fossil fuel emissions

The analysis also shows more dollars staying in the state for energy efficiency and clean energy, and increased spending on local goods and services from an increase in local jobs.
I have written before about Massachusetts earning and keeping its designation as the nation’s most energy efficient state. Barr provided funding for this independent analysis to quantify the energy and economic sector impacts of the Green Communities Act policies, comparing against an alternative scenario with none of these policies.
